Lure of the Temptress

Lure of the Temptress is Revolution Software's debut point-and-click adventure game published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment. It was released in June 1992 for Atari ST, DOS and Amiga home computers. The player assumes the role of a young peasant named Diermot who has to overthrow an evil sorceress. Lure of the Temptress is the first game built with the Virtual Theatre engine, which Revolution used in the subsequent games Beneath a Steel Sky and the first two games in the Broken Sword series. It was received favorably by critics, a commercial success and re-released as freeware on April 1, 2003.

Lure of the Temptress is a fantasy point-and-click adventure game with comedic elements. It was the first game developed by Revolution Software and was the debut for their own in-house developed Virtual Theatre game engine which Revolution's later games, Beneath a Steel Sky and the Broken Sword series, would utilise. You are a young man named Diermot, who was living a quiet pastoral life in a peaceful kingdom until the King conscripted you to serve in his army. It seems that he recently received news of a revolt in the hamlet of Turnvale, orchestrated by a young and beautiful apprentice sorceress named Selena. Much to his surprise (and yours!), he was met not by peasants armed with pitchforks, but by a horde of grotesque gargoyle-like creatures: vicious mercenaries known as 'The Skorl'. The king and all of his men were killed. Except you. You fell off of your horse and were knocked unconscious. You awaken in a dungeon in Turnvale, the prisoner of the cruel Temptress Selena with an unfriendly Skorl guard just outside the door. Your sidekick, Ratpouch practically steals the show with his observations and wisecracks. Plus you can tell him to do almost anything (complex commands), and he will do it. And the tongue-in-cheek humor of the other 'locals' is just as good, particularly from one or two of the regulars who hang out at the pub. In August 2003, the game was released as freeware.

Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror

Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror is a point-and-click adventure video game originally released on Microsoft Windows and PlayStation in 1997. It was re-released on Microsoft Windows, OS X and iOS as a remastered edition in 2010 and on Android in 2012. It is the second installment in the Broken Sword series, and the first game in the series that does not follow the Knights Templar storyline. The player assumes the role of George Stobbart, a young American who is an eyewitness to the kidnapping of his girlfriend Nicole Collard.

Our two favorite amateur detectives, George and Nico, are back again, to solve yet another dangerous and spellbinding mystery and save the world. This time they've stumbled onto a crime cartel with a megalomaniac kingpin, and a supernatural evil from Central America that harks back to ancient Mayan prophecy. As the story opens, George is back in Paris again for a romantic interlude with Nico, his photo-journalist girlfriend. But she soon tells him that, in the process of her investigation of a drug-smuggling ring, she has found a mysterious Mayan stone, and so they decide to visit an archaeologist to see if they can find out more about it. They have no sooner arrived than they are attacked by unknown assailants and Nico is kidnapped. As the game begins, George has been left to die, tied to a chair in the middle of a locked and burning room and, as if that weren't enough, he is staring into the eyes of a deadly giant tarantula that is advancing toward him. This is the first of several new and fascinating puzzles in the game that challenge you to "think as if you are really there" and come up with some truly creative problem solving. And, as in the previous game, you can die, so make sure you save before you try things (and keep George's lucky piece of coal handy!). But most of the other puzzles are still the kind that require using your investigative skills and keen observation. Overall, these puzzles seemed somewhat easier than those in the first game. Once again, it is a 3rd person, 2D, point and click game with superior 'cartoon-style' graphics, excellent music, and an even simpler "novice-friendly" interface. But, unlike the first game, this time you alternate between controlling George and Nico to solve the mystery, a refreshing innovation that serves to flesh out her character for you.

Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars

Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars (also known as Circle of Blood in the United States)[1] is a 1996 point-and-click adventure game developed by Revolution Software. The player assumes the role of George Stobbart, an American tourist in Paris, as he attempts to unravel a conspiracy. The game takes place in both real and fictional locations in Europe and the Middle East.

This game is a real winner! It combines the very best aspects of traditional adventure games and mystery thrillers, with even a little romance thrown in for good measure, and a suspenseful and slowly evolving story that will keep you glued to your seat. You are young George Stobbart, just a regular guy from California on vacation in Paris, the city of love. You are sitting outside a French cafe one day, watching the world go by and trying unsuccessfully to pick up the waitress, when out of the corner of your eye you notice a well-dressed gentleman carrying a briefcase enter the restaurant. He is followed by a garish-looking clown, in full makeup and costume, playing an accordion. Moments later the clown reappears on a dead run, but now he's the one carrying the briefcase! But before you even have time to question what's going on, a massive explosion rips out the entire front wall of the cafe, sending you flying, luckily, into one of the restaurant's table umbrellas. When you finally come to, at first dazed and confused, you are naturally anxious to know what happened, and why. What was in that briefcase that was worth killing for? Little do you know that your questions, and your efforts to find the clown who almost killed you, will change your life. You will follow a path of deception and murder that leads you into the very heart of an evil plan, a plan that revolves around the legendary mystical powers and treasure of the Knights Templar! And so begins the long, engrossing and often humorous, professionally written script. You will meet and talk to many people, and you should exhaust all topics of conversation in order to obtain vital clues. The topics available are determined by what you have learned to date, so make sure that you return to talk to them again after new developments. One of the people that you meet early in the game is a beautiful photographer named Nicole Collard, or Nico. She not only becomes your romantic interest, she will also give you suggestions about what to do next if you telephone her. This is a 2D, 3rd person, point & click game, with an easy-to-use interface. The music is good and the graphics were rendered by professional movie animators, with an attention to detail that makes you feel as if you really are visiting the various worldwide locations in the story. There is a map for easy travel and new locations are added to it as the story unfolds. Note that each location that you visit may be larger than the area that you see on the first screen, so make sure that you check all of the edges of the scene, as well as other places within the picture, for any exits that may be hidden. The puzzles are excellent and integrated into the story. Many of them require creative and sometimes daring thinking. Don't forget to click your right mouse button on objects for descriptions and clues: it is essential to solving one or two of the puzzles. And yes, you can die, so make sure that you remember to save before facing something dangerous.

Using the then revolutionary Virtual Theatre engine, BASS' characters can move freely independent of the player, allowing the game world to be much more dynamic than anything seen before (other than Virtual Theatre's debut game, the less popular Lure of the Temptress). Otherwise, the engine provides tried and true point-and-click adventure gameplay. The story is a remarkable blend of cold, sometimes chilling, science fiction with a brilliantly dry sense of humour – often topped off with a bit of genuine emotion, whether from your robotic sidekick Joey (possibly the best sidekick in the genre’s history) or from the family dynamics that play into the incredibly moving ending. The dialogue is uniformly brilliant, the voice acting is top-notch, the art is colourful and vibrant (especially the beautiful introductory comic sequence, drawn by Watchmen creator Dave Gibbons, who also drew the game’s gorgeous backgrounds), and the entire experience feels like a true genre classic. As for Aug 02, 2003, it became officially freeware. The creators of ScummVM, a gaming interface written to make old adventure games playable on modern operating systems (only when you own the original software) asked developer Revolution if they were allowed to take a look at the source code to be able to fully support the game in their interface. They got more than they expected when Revolution made the full game (cd version with music and speech) available to everyone.
